Where are you from and where are you based now? I can thank my success to the very ‘well travelled’ childhood I experienced.  I was born in Yugoslavia to Hungarian parents, moved to Brazil when I was 6, then lived in Hungary for 4 years before emigrating to Canada.

I finished my education in Canada then I moved back to Europe and currently live in Budapest, Hungary.  All this travel and living in different places has exposed me to many different cultures and experiences that have helped to grow my interests in many different things, but more on this later…

How old are you? I’m unsure, because I stopped counting 🙂 Just kidding, I was born in 1983, so that will make me 38 years old this year. Which is insane, I feel like I’m 20, tops!  

When and how did you get into affiliate marketing and what were you doing before?

This is always a fun story to tell. Before getting into affiliate marketing I used to organize big all night dance parties professionally. It wasn’t until I moved to Europe, and lost all my savings that I had no choice but to look for an opportunity to make money somehow.

My wife suggested I look into what my friend (who also moved back to the EU from Canada) was doing,  he was driving a brand new M3 so he was doing well…  I looked into it and learned he was a coder. I realized that wouldn’t work for me because I am not logical, I am much more creative.     

So I began doing some research and I discovered an amazing webmaster community, from that I started building my own sites to SEO and in the process met some nice people who suggested that I should write content for them. So it all began with a tiny little content writing company, and my SEO site network.

Tell us about one of your biggest successes as an affiliate marketer? I had multiple successes as an affiliate marketer, because I am always evolving and adapting to change. My first big success was promoting Clean Master and DU Speed Booster, I was able to scale these two app install campaigns to every GEO I could, and I hit 7 figures in profit with it.

Then I had a big success in trials for Nutra andSkincare in Tier2 GEOs, which I then followed with COD in Asian GEOs, after that I moved into lead generation.

I am a serial entrepreneur that just gets a rush from change and learning new stuff.

When and why did you start your affiliate marketing blog iamattila.com? I started my blog in 2013 because I love to write and it helps me remember to write stuff down.   My first posts were mostly notes, and tutorials on how to do stuff so that I would remember everything, and it all grew from that.

What kind of blog posts do you write? These days I write mostly guides and long tutorials that show how to use tools like Adplexity for specific purposes.  

What kind of success has the blog had? The blog is very successful,  I mean you invited me for an interview, so I must be quite famous to get an invitation from you! 😀   All joking aside, the blog is a great success and I believe it’s because it just tells it like it is. Unlike others that sell courses, I can say whatever the hell I want.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to a newbie wanting to start in affiliate marketing? Here ares 4 tips to get a newbie started:

1 – Read my book, it teaches the fundamentals a beginner needs to know in a very easy to understand manner.

2 –  Collect a minimum $1,000 that you can afford to lose, think of this as an investment in your affiliate marketing career. It will be the ‘getting your feet wet’ budget.

3 –  Use a spy tool and see how others are running things and only run stuff that’s proven to work.

4 – Join a community like iAmAffiliate where you can get valid and honest answers and advice, not BS made up shit by fake gurus/influencers who never run campaigns but make their money from Youtube videos or selling courses.

Do you have any tips for what will be big in 2021? 2 things will be huge:

  • Ecommerce will continue to grow, branded ecom and niched ecom stores.
  • Lead generation, as businesses are struggling, they will need help from marketers to get them new clients.

Being so successful, tell us a bit about what your lifestyle is like being a Super Affiliate… What are the good points and the bad points? I’m an entrepreneur, so the definite bad point is being obsessed with doing all this and non-stop learning. So much so I work 12-14 hour days just because it’s fun.

There’s a lot of sitting which sucks as you age, and also the monitors put a strain on your eyes. I never thought I’d say this because when I was in my teens, I could sit without moving from the PC all day long for at least 10 hours and my vision was 20/20.

But now, at 38, I can’t read small text on my phone and at night everything becomes blurry and it’s not enjoyable. Also I can’t sit long at the PC and need to get out and move around.

Now for the positives! I make as much $$$ in a few weeks as others do in a year, I can work whenever I want, day or night, from wherever (although not right now due to COVID).  

I made all my dreams come true, and can pretty much buy whatever I want whenever. My biggest worry is not not being able to pay the bills, but about ZUCCY BANNING ME ON FACEBOOK randomly for no reason.

Affiliate marketing trends 2021

The Collins Dictionary has chosen “lockdown” as its word of the year for 2020. 2020 was an incredibly unusual and challenging year for businesses. And if you are wondering how this affected affiliate marketing, one thing is for sure: affiliate marketing is not dead. Indeed, it has become a key income source for many people during 2020.

So, it is definitely not “out of the picture” and we can’t wait to see what 2021 brings.  So here are some of our predictions regarding Affiliate marketing trends and tips for 2021.

1 – Influencer marketing

If you are thinking that influencer marketing will be relevant in 2021, you are totally right. In fact, according to InfluencerMarketingHub 63% of marketers intend to increase their influencer marketing budget in the next 12 months.

When less is more. Brands have realized that there’s no need to target influences with 1M followers for a successful campaign. A study conducted by Dr Jonah Berger from the Wharton School and the Keller Fay Group showed that 82% of consumers are “highly likely” to follow the recommendation of a micro–influencer. 

Micro and nano influencers have less followers. In general, micro-influencers have between 10k and 100k followers and nano influencers have less than 5k. And that’s not a bad thing at all. 

They are specialists in their niche or sub-niche, sharing high quality, authentic and genuine content, which is shared to their group of followers. The engagement ratio from their audience is higher than those with many followers, as they interact and have a personal connection with their group, allowing them to gain a greater trust and loyalty than macro-influencers (+100k) and celebrities or mega-influencers  (with over 1M).

US influencer marketing agency Traacks revealed in its 2020 State of Influence report that Instagram influencers with less than 50,000 followers have an average of 3.5% engagement rate while macro-influencers have 2.67%.

There’s no doubt that micro and nano influencers are stronger than ever and they are much more affordable, which is key for many brands – including small businesses. 

But the most important trend are the shoppable posts. You can definitely expect more sponsored posts #ad in 2021. Influencers help to make the connection with brands and consumers a success, since the return investment is quick. According to a Business Insider estimation, brands are set to spend up to $15 billion on influencer marketing by 2022.

Instagram dominates the social marketing landscape, it’s the preferred platform of choice for brands (79% of brands are using it), as it is one of the best platforms to engage with consumers. But TikTok has shown consistent results in verticals such as entertainment and e-commerce.

Around 80% of consumers prefer to watch live videos rather than reading a blog, which takes us to the next trend: streaming video.

2 – Video Content Marketing

During the stay-at-home year, pretty much everything has been related to video, not only entertainment but also classes and webinars, office meetings and friends-and-family meetings, job interviews, etc. 

Marketers can’t ignore video. It’s the most productive component in digital marketing and it’s unstoppable. According to Cisco: by 2021, internet video traffic (business and consumer, combined) will be 80% of all internet traffic compared to 2016 it was 67%. 

The rise in the use of video for advertising is a result in the change of video viewing habits and the advances in smartphones, which are faster and bigger, helping the ability to consume video content.  

Viewers retain 95% of a message (insivia) when they watch it through video and it has an undoubted positive impact on consumers during the purchase process. Wyzowl reported that 84% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy by watching a video. 

Instagram Reels was the biggest launch in 2020, and it was a direct response to the success of TikTok, which was dominating the short-form creative content through short-videos. There were videos on IGTV, which is the YouTube of Instagram, but that’s for longer and higher quality videos.

3. E-commerce

The effect of the pandemic has reinforced this vertical, many consumers have changed their way of purchasing. With more consumers shopping online than ever before, we will see more brands and retailers invest in technology to accommodate the needs of the new connected shopper said Sarah Hughes, Product Marketing Manager, Inmar Intelligence. As you might have guessed, video streaming has had a major impact in e-commerce. The combo of ecommerce and video is definitely something to keep in mind when promoting products. 

Some large platforms are already profiting from this great combination and showing how important e-commerce is for the companies. TikTok partnered with the e-commerce platform Shopify. It is easy to install TikTok from the Shopify App  Store. Once installed, merchants will have access to the key features of TikTok for Business Ads within their Shopify dashboard. Features include: creating TikTok  campaigns for promoting products just by uploading images or videos, targeting the audience (demographic, location and behavioral options) and optimizing the campaign.

In December 2020 Walmart announced that live streamed a video test, during this livestream, TikTok users were able to buy Walmart’s fashion items within the app. Levi’s is another example of a company that has seen a significant increase in traffic thanks to its partnership with TikTok.

Instagram could not sit idly by watching how its competitor, TikTok, was making a major move to in-stream purchases, and that’s why it launched Shopping in Reels. Products are directly linked with “Shop Now” buttons, allowing consumers to save items, learn more about them, and of course, buy them. Shopping was already available within Instagram through pictures in posts and even on IGTV, but as we have mentioned, short-form video content is increasing its presence and Reels is the weapon to directly compete with TikTok. Creators are allowed to add a tag informing users that it’s branded content, providing transparency.

Consumers use voice search to find information as soon as possible – to find answers to their questions, research products, find local businesses, etc.  Nowadays, more people than ever are using their voice instead of searching by text, as it’s faster and easier. Consumers can then be referred to a local business or a retail site which has an impact on direct sales. 

When asking something to a smart device, we ask the whole question (researchers have found that on average it is seven or more words) instead of typing a few words, thus, keywords are no longer that useful or well targeted. Imagine yourself searching for a restaurant, you will probably type something like “seafood restaurants Madrid”, while asking “where is the closest seafood restaurant to me?” Voice search will affect keyword SEO going forward.

6. Diversification

2020 has taught us the importance of many different things, and diversification is one of them. A key for success is to diversify your affiliate income by having multiple revenue streams. The most enduring affiliates are those that work with a diverse portfolio, this way you can manage and spread the risk while maximizing your potential. But don’t lose focus, while you can learn from others, don’t try to replicate what’s working for them. Only your own testing, skills, experience and knowledge will drive your business forward.

With more than one billion active users, TikTok has become one of the applications on everyone’s lips and fingertips in recent years. With features such as generating short 3–15 second music videos and 30–60 second long videos, using filters and allowing duo responses between users, the Chinese company merged with Musical.ly in 2017 has earned a place in the heart of the youngest users and those still nostalgic for Vine, which closed in early 2017.

TikTok has gone a step further and has encouraged millions of people to express themselves creatively on the social network. With its hashtags and user-created sounds, we admit that the app is fun, creative, but most of all, truly addictive.

It is currently available for iOS and Android. Its approach makes it attractive and eye-catching, making it one of the most downloaded applications in the world today.

TikTok Ads

Like any application, the platform has its corresponding advertising section. Although it is currently in development, in this post we will focus on the existing tools that TikTok has.

Advertising Formats

Within the initial format that the platform proposes, TikTok considers full-screen ads (that follow the guides of conventional videos already within the app) to be optimal for user experience.

The video format can be both vertical and horizontal, as well as allowing the use of images. Ads will show on 3 different sections:

  • In-feed 
  • Detail Page 
  • Post-roll

After 9 seconds the ad shows the call to action in card format.

Review tips

Here are some recommendations when creating your ads:

  • Make sure that the type of language you use in the creative is acceptable in the target country, e.g. slang words that could be considered offensive. Remember that TikTok is targeted at a younger audience.
  • Check the spelling with a native speaker.
  • Avoid creatives that offer an action that cannot be done within TikTok, “swipe up” for example.
  • Make sure that what is promoted is related to what is displayed on the landing page.
  • Avoid using elements without copyright permissions e.g. brand logos, hashtags, straplines, images and other copyrighted elements.
  • Make sure that the audio of your video ad (music/sound) is clear and understandable/coherent, because audio is required for an advertising video.

How to target on TikTok?

Using TikTok Ads, you can target the audience you want to see your ad, the targeting can be selected during the ad group creation process.
The available options are by device, demographic and audience, we are going to expand it:

Device

  • Connection Type: WIFI, 2G, 3G, 4G
  • Operation System: iOS, Android
  • Operation System Version
  • Carrier

Demographics

  • Gender: Female, Male
  • Age: 13-17, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55+
  • Location: country, region, province, currently by city targeting is only available in India.
  • Language
  • Interest / behavior: Interest targeting focuses on the content that the user consumes within the application thanks to Machine Learning, unlike behavioral targeting that allows targeting depending on the user’s recent interaction with the content. We recommend that you do not ignore the targeting options for interests, as well as behavior. They can be a key point of success for your campaign! For example, if Melisa watches a video about an anti-aging facial care routine, a behavioral label “Skin Care” will be associated with its user. Now, the interest label may not be “Skin Care” since the algorithm analyzed that in the long term it is not something that Melisa is interested in, but rather that her interest label is something else like “Personal Care”. 

Audience

You can include or exclude customizable audiences, it’s an interesting option for audiences that have already been exposed to the campaign and its content, TikTok proposes a powerful tool for remarketing, (which can help you review potential customers, increase followers), engagement or simply helping you create your audience thanks to another advanced instrument: “Similar Audiences”

Analyzing your existing audience, “Similar Audiences” allows you to analyze the attributes of your current cluster to be able to search for groups of people with characteristics similar to those already specified. To ensure that it works properly, we recommend that the audience source you use is not less than 10,000 people. The crucial thing is that the list and its attributes are correct.

Tip: The more specific the audience size, the more accurate the tool will be!

Bidding Methods

The models available on the platform are:

  • Cost per thousand impressions (CPM)
  • Cost per thousand optimized impressions (oCPM)
  • Cost per thousand views (CPV)
  • Cost per click (CPC)
  • Optimized cost per click (oCPC)

Advertising Cost

TikTok Ads Manager has the option to choose two budget options: daily or lifetime. You can edit your budget whenever you want, even when your campaign is running. The system will never go beyond the budget you indicate.

To ensure that advertising has a sufficient budget, the minimum for each campaign is $US50 and at the group level $US20.

Also, TikTok Ads Manager has different bidding methods to select according to your preferences, taking into account that the “bid” is what indicates how much you are willing to pay for the action that the user generates when he/she encounters one of your ads.

Conclusion

Although TikTok is in its first steps of developing its Ads Manager, we cannot deny that it is a great opportunity to get into its new formats and generate great results for your campaigns.

Colin Dijs is the first interview in our Super Affiliate series. Colin has built up a great reputation as an affiliate marketer who not only produces educational videos on Youtube but also runs a very successful affiliate marketing business. Find out how he quit his call centre job to go on to earn over 250k per month with affiliate marketing.

Where are you from and where are you based now? I’m from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I used to live in Canada for about 2 years where I finished my Bachelors degree in International Business.

How old are you? 27

When and how did you get into affiliate marketing and what were you doing before? I’ve always been involved in entrepreneurship style activities. My biggest success was around 17 years old when I bought World of Warcraft trading cards from the USA, had them shipped to Amsterdam, unboxed them for YouTube videos and sold the valuable “loot” cards. This made me about 700%-2000% ROI per shipment by doing calculations based on the odds of pulling a “special” loot card.

While finishing my studies I drop shipped iPhone cases, had a kids smartwatch store and did Print-on-Demand. Mainly, with the e-commerce activities I used Facebook Ads and did 10k in sales in my first month. But I realised after the first month that I hated dealing with “annoying” customer requests and quit e-commerce. 

The one of my connections got me into affiliate marketing with Facebook Ads. I hit it off quite quickly, with conversions on the first day! I replaced my income from my dayjob and then quit when I had a stable 10k revenue per month. Thereafter my results accelerated quickly.

Tell us about one of your biggest successes as an affiliate marketer? As soon as I quit my job and could fully dedicate myself to this business instead of working 52 hours a week in a call center, the results went up dramatically. From 10k to 100k to 250k the following month.

Tell us about why you started your Youtube affiliate tutorials and what kinds of things do you feature? To be 100% real with you I heard there was a lot of money to be made with info products and they had insane profit margins. I added it to my business as an additional income source. However, that being said, I knew the market was huge as there is little to no people showing you the actual methods being used, if they do at all it’s extremely outdated information.

The YouTube thing grew into something beyond my imagination and now in 2020 it’s grown into a full education company called “Agency 3980” where we teach affiliate marketing. All verticals, all traffic sources, I have an entire team dedicated to daily coaching for students. It’s been an amazing experience so far for us as well as for the students. 

How do you promote your tutorials to affiliates? It’s all organic traffic from YouTube and a huge part is word of mouth.

Tell us all about Deberoo… Deberoo is an affiliate marketing software company where we invested in its development throughout 2020. It will go live January 1st 2021. What’s the best piece of advice you can give to a newbie wanting to start in affiliate marketing? Make a plan and follow it. Don’t just “try” something, just do it, commit to your goals and work your ass off. Results will NOT come overnight. Anyone telling you it’s “easy” to make money online with affiliate marketing is full of shit. However, there are some guidance materials like my tutorials that can make the path a little easier. All in all, business is hard and that makes it great as so many people are not willing to do what it takes. Therefore you get exceptional rewards if you push yourself.

Do you have any tips for what will be big in 2021? My team and I are already preparing all the materials for Quarter 1 2021. The nutra vertical will be booming! It’s a huge opportunity every year to get people to buy through their new found goals.

Being so successful, tell us a bit about what your lifestyle is like being a Super Affiliate… I’m not your standard affiliate I’m afraid. I see myself more of a business man building a business empire. I don’t party, I work. I’m still young and want to give it all I have right now. I work Monday to Saturday, six days a week. With Sunday off. I go to the gym 5 times per week. I like to wake up at 5am so that I’m in the office way before the employees come in. I can really brainstorm and work hard during those first 2 hours. As soon as the employees come in things get chaotic and meetings go back to back.

Starting out as an affiliate and then growing my business into a 26 man team has been a real struggle but very rewarding. Looking back to two years ago, when I was a single affiliate, the journey has been great. Whether you want to be a single affiliate, make as much money as you can to party and live the dream, live in Bali or Bangkok or you want to build a business empire like myself.
